The Bagpipe is the student-run newspaper of Covenant College. It is published 25 times per academic year. Each print issue is at least 8 pages, including four pages in full color.
The Bagpipe is distributed in print free of charge to all 1000 students at the College, as well as to faculty, staff, administration, and visitors. We also sometimes distribute copies to local coffee shops such as Starbucks and Grayfriars. Readership has always been extremely high, but recent improvements to the paper have taken student and staff readership to unprecedented levels.
The Bagpipe offers two types of advertisements: Display (print) advertisements and Internet advertisements.
With the print edition of the Bagpipe reaching over a thousand people on a weekly basis, it makes a great advertising opportunity. We are in the process of developing a richer website with regular video content and rich interactive functionality, so we are also looking for web advertisements. Hundreds of alumni regularly read the online edition of the Bagpipe, and hopefully with our new vision the site will soon become a hub of student and faculty discussion as well.
Display Advertisements
Display advertisement sizes and prices are based on column inches (col. in.). One col. in. is one column wide (1.875”) by 1” high. Each page is broken into five columns with four gutters separating them. Display advertisements spanning more than one column include an additional 0.1825” per gutter (2 columns = 1.875” x 2 + 0.1825” = 3.933”).
The smallest display advertisement available is 8 col. in. (affectionately called a “Baby Eight” ad) for $52.00, based on a base rate of $6.50 per column inch. The next smallest display advertisement is 10 col. in. for $65.00.
Each advertisement must fit in width within the boundaries of one, two, three, four, or five columns; those not fitting will be shrunk proportionally to fit and will be charged the previously agreed upon price. The minimum height for an advertisement is 2 inches.
Prices for Common Sizes
To make the design process easier, The Bagpipe encourages advertisers to choose from the following common display advertisement sizes:
- Baby Eight (8 col. in.) for $52.00
- Eighth-page (10 col. in.) for $65.00
- Dirty Dozen (12 col. in.) for $78.00
- Quarter-page (15 col. in.) for $97.50
We may under special circumstances allow other sizes to be published (at the base rate), but we encourage advertisers to use these standard sizes. These prices are for non-color display advertisements. Color display advertisements cost 125% of the above prices ($65.00 for a Baby Eight in color, $81.25 for an Eighth-page in color, etc.)
Options for common sizes
There are several ways of configuring the common-sized display advertisements:
- Quarter-page (15 col. in.)
- V: 3 col. (5.99″) x 5″
- H: 5 col. (10.105″) x 3″
- Dirty Dozen (12 col. in.)
- V: 3 col. (5.99″) x 4″
- H: 4 col. (8.0475″) x 3″
- Eighth-page (10 col. in.)
- V: 2 col. (4.000″) x 5″
- H: 5 col. (10.105″) x 2
- Baby Eight (8 col. in.)
- V: 2 col. (4.000″) x 4″
Exact measurements are subject to the capability of computer software.
Frequent display advertiser discount
Frequent display advertisers get a 1 percent discount per issue advertised in, subtracted from each bill.
For example, placing a display advertisement in eight issues yields an 8 percent discount. If you take out 8 quarter-page display advertisements, the cost of the eighth issue will be $65.00 – 8% = $59.80, and you will have saved $22.75 over the course of those 8 issues!
The minimum number of issues to receive a discount is two (so, you will receive a 2 percent discount on the 2nd issue).
