Covenant Rents Out AMC Theater in Fort Oglethorpe

On February 19 the Campus Activities Board rented out the AMC movie theatre in Fort Oglethorpe. Covenant students were able to choose from different movie options, sign up with five of their close contacts, and get free popcorn and drinks all while following COVID-19 precautions. The movie choices were “The Notebook,” “Mission: Impossible - Fallout,” “Jurassic World,” “Crazy Rich Asians,” “The Lego Movie,” and “School of Rock.”

There were many students that took advantage of this event, as it was nice to be able to go somewhere off the mountain. I interviewed three students, Bella Trent ’24, Emily Cothran ’22 and Paloma Bavcevic ’24, about the event and asked them their thoughts about it. The following transcript is edited for length and clarity.

What did you think about the event?

Trent: I thought that the event was a brilliant idea to do something social but COVID-friendly. It was really nice to be in a theater with friends again, and the free popcorn and soda was great. I also appreciated the variety of movie choices that we could choose from.

Bavcevic: I thought that it was a great event! It brought the community together in a unique way.

Cothran: I thought that the event was a great idea! It was a wonderful way to get off the mountain and do something fun while also being safe.

Do you think COVID-19 restrictions were met?

Trent: As far as I could tell, the COVID restrictions were met well. The spacing of seats and rows in addition to sitting with those who you had ridden with seemed like a good system.

Bavcevic: I think COVID restrictions were definitely met. They separated groups by close contacts and had a row apart from other groups.

Cothran: It seemed like admin did a good job of keeping everyone distanced and making sure that people were masked.

What was your experience like?

Trent: I had a great experience sitting in the front row with no one sitting in front or behind, eating my free popcorn, and being able to watch a movie on a big screen again. It was easy to get in once we told the people at the door our names, and everything went smoothly.

Bavcevic: My experience was super fun!

Cothran: I had so much fun! It was great to go out to a movie with my friends with the peace of mind that we were being COVID-safe.

Do you think the Campus Activity Board made a good decision in choosing to do a theater takeover?

Trent: Yes, I think it was an excellent decision.

Bavcevic: 100% it was a brilliant idea! The event brought the community together, was fun, and unique and a chance to get off campus in a cool way!

Cothran: Yes for sure!

Was there anything that you didn’t like about the event?

Trent: Nothing that I could think of.

Bavcevic: Honestly, no! I think that all of it was great and they thought of everything even to provide snacks!

Cothran: Nothing. It was a great idea.

What are your thoughts on the movie choices? Good? Bad? Could’ve been better?

Trent: I thought that there was a different kind of movie for everyone, across all kinds of genres. The choices seemed well thought out to me.

Bavcevic: I watched “School of Rock” and it was hilarious. Really enjoyed it. I think the movie choices all seemed to be good and ranged in all movie genres.

Cothran: I thought that the movie choices were great! I’m sure that there are certain movies that they couldn’t play because of licensing and such, but I was happy with the variety of options that we had.
