Mens Basketball Begins

The Scot’s Mens Basketball program kicked off for the 2023-2024 season this past week. Varsity and JV had their first games last week.

Varsity freshman Kaleb Lofton is excited to be making his debut as guard. “I'm an energetic person when it comes to the court, hyping up my guys,” Lofton said about his role on the team so far.

Lofton looks up to senior Logan Pearlman for his leadership and junior Luke Crowden as a role model for their shared position.

As of Sunday, November 12, the varsity team has played four games. They lost to Lee University and University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in exhibition games. At their season opening tournament at Sewanee, they fell to Wittenberg University but beat the host team Sewanee. Their home opener was on Wednesday, November 15.

Sophomore Parker Pruitt has just joined the JV basketball team this season. He said, “It's nice to be back out there, especially after not playing basketball competitively for over a year.”

The JV team has played two games against Bryan College so far and lost both of them. Their home opener was on Monday, November 13.

CCS pre-season poll rankings were released on Wednesday, November 8. The rankings are determined by vote among the coaches from the teams in the conference. This year, Covenant Mens Basketball was ranked seventh out of seven teams.

“They underrank us every year. It’s ridiculous because we’re a lot better this year in my opinion,” said Pruitt, who is one of the varsity team managers. “The freshmen that played last year are a lot more mature and are getting more playing time, and then our juniors from last year are really stepping up as seniors.”

“I’ve never been one to indulge or care about rankings,” said Lofton. “They probably ranked us low because we lost some pieces from last year, but they also don't know what we added or things we changed to work as a unit.”

Scots mens basketball home games are riveting to watch. Be sure to come down to Barnes PE Center to support our guys as they work to prove the CCS rankings wrong.
