Softball Returns

Lady Scots softball is back in full swing for the 2024 season. Last year, they finished fifth in the conference with a record of eight wins and eight losses. CCS has not yet released the projected standings, but it will be interesting to see where the Lady Scots land on those polls.

Junior Infielder Helena Nagy chose Covenant Softball because of the team’s resilience. “We have had several coaches over the last few years and have often been overlooked or cast aside, but that never stopped these girls from pouring their hearts and souls into this sport,” said Nagy. “When I committed to the team, I knew it didn't matter what coach I had because I knew these girls would push me and the team forward everyday.”

Junior Second Base and Catcher Isabella Duran said she chose Covenant softball because she admired the Christ-centered nature of the team. “Everyone on the team strives to be more like Christ daily and pushes one another towards that goal, which helps us blend together well as a team,” said Duran.

As with all Covenant athletic teams, the softball team has a set of core values based in scripture. According to Duran, the Lady Scots’ core values are unity, commitment and service, drawing inspiration from Romans 12:1-16 and Ephesians 4: 1-7.

Covenant Softball has faced many challenges over the years, and this year is no exception. Nagy pinned inconsistent coaching as an obstacle the team has faced during her time on the team. “Before Coach Leux, we were in a constant cycle of coaches, receiving a new one each year,” said Nagy, “Through it all, we managed to keep our identity and keep our ability to believe in ourselves.” Duran listed injuries as a struggle for the team.

Another struggle common to outdoor sports has been the inclement weather since returning to campus. The softball field was redone and has not settled well due to the freezing weather and heavy precipitation of the past few weeks. The softball field has flooded and been unusable for the last week or so, and the Lady Scots have had to battle the other in-season sports for practice time in the gym ahead of their home opener against Berry on Saturday, February 10. The Lady Scots have been practicing at Chattanooga Christian School’s fields recently.

Despite a rocky start, Nagy and Duran say the team is excited for the season. “I think we have serious potential,” said Nagy. “We have a team that is capable of vulnerability with one another, loving one another so well, and winning lots of games.” Duran echoed Nagy’s sentiments, adding that “I also am looking forward to being a guide for the underclassmen and hopefully be a strong support system for them as they navigate these.”

It may be a long walk up the hill to Highlands (a mile from Mac to be exact), but be sure to gather your friends and hallmates to come out and support Covenant Softball this season!
