In grade school, I remember having lots of good answers to this question — vacations, acquired skills, new experiences; but somewhere between high school and college, the question began to put me on the defensive. That’s because I realized that what it really meant was; “did you get a job? Were you making money and thereby contributing to society and being a responsible grown up?”

It starts with the wind changing.
Hot summer air turns to cool autumn breezes that chill the temperature just enough to let one consider bringing out all their sweaters and sweatshirts and every collection of colorful scarves, lulling a passerby into believing it will stay cool enough for them to wear the layers all day.

Newest leaves unfurling,
Eden her blessings bestowing,
Here a fig, there a berry,
But one treasure to carry.
The Tree of Life by name,
But man shunned its frame
The Tree of Knowledge to crave
God’s glory, but man met the grave.

Most of Monday, Sept. 20, belonged to the rain and fog. The walk to my classes, holding a broken umbrella above my head, had set me in a decidedly uncreative frame of mind. I wanted nothing more than to sit in my room for the rest of the day. However, my music professor required a concert attendance as part of our grade, so I went to see Karen Slack and Casey Robards perform in the chapel at 7 pm. The concert lasted about an hour, and by the end, I had nearly forgotten about the rain and drudgery outside. While I am not a music or art major, the concert nonetheless touched and challenged me in ways I could not have predicted.

In 2020 Ali Waller began working on her project /200, which was started in response to the trial of Jeffery Epstein in the Netflix documentary “Filthy Rich.” Ali’s installation has been incredibly impactful for so many survivors of sexual abuse as they learn how to navigate sexuality, intimacy, and bodily autonomy.

I cannot think of a time in my life when I did not love to cook. Cooking has always been close to my heart; something that allows me to connect with my family and those around me in a very sacred way.

They were never fond of stories. How could they be? They were each in their own little worlds. He grew up on a farm in Texas, exploring acres and acres of seemingly undiscovered land. Every day was a new adventure. Every hour. She grew up in the bustling city with subways and fast walking and loud sounds of cars in the street. Every day had a schedule and a clock.
Senior Art Majors Present 2021 Capstones
This year, Covenant’s art majors presented their senior projects for the first time since the pandemic hit. With so many COVID-19 precautions in place, there was no way for others to be able to see all the work that these students put into the last project of their college career. Two art seniors, Shelby Farrar ’21 and Bennett Sunder ’21, shared how they felt about the process of making their project and presenting it to the student body.
A Prayer for Wrapping Things Up
Oh dear Father,
It’s pretty wild to think we’ve gotten almost to the end of this year.
As we scramble through papers and projects, with exams looming on the horizon, would you come by your Spirit, calming and quieting our hearts, and bringing sharp clarity to our brains even when we haven’t slept well.
Taylor Swift Releases Re-recorded Album
On April 9, 2021, Taylor Swift released her re-recording of her Grammy-winning 2008 studio album, “Fearless.” This re-recording, “Fearless (Taylor’s Version)” is a masterful recreation. In 2019, Swift announced that her first six studio albums had been sold against her will to Scooter Braun, who manages huge stars such as Kanye West and Justin Bieber.
New Milestones Reached in 2021 Oscars
This year we celebrated the 93rd Oscars with a socially-distanced mayhem of an awards show. Famed director Steven Soderbergh was in charge of this year's Oscars, which was no easy task while following COVID-19 restrictions and still managing to entertain in the face of the record-low viewership that many awards shows have received during the pandemic.

Waltzing With Potatoes: An Evaluation of a “VeggieTales” Story
The Bible, the single most important book in history, is full of beautiful, amazing and life-changing stories, in addition to stories of violence and sex (looking at you Song of Solomon) and the occasional talking animal. As a result, the challenge of youth pastors and parents is how to teach lessons from these less-than-kid-friendly stories. One group of vegetable-loving people attempted to solve this problem.

The hallway in Carter Hall connecting the rest of campus to the Great Hall is like a perpetual awkward moment. When you are walking towards another person, there is a certain distance that we all know about (though I don’t suppose any of us could say what it is for sure) that you must be apart from the other person before you look up and make eye contact with them. If you try to acknowledge the person too soon, then you will have to awkwardly endure the time in between actually passing them without knowing where to look or whether you ought to say hi to them again as you walk by.

Someone Finally Goes to Sugar's Ribs
Thank you for reading the first installment of Dinner with Dave, a new column of restaurant reviews that will appear in each issue of the Bagpipe. I think it will be a wonderful way to introduce Chattanooga to the Covenant community, especially freshmen who haven’t experienced the city pre-COVID-19.

Fresh breezes usher in a new week,
Cleansing the atmosphere of the last;
Inhale; exhale; the sky welcomes our breath
The sun graces us for the first time in a week,
And the wind whispers a promised rest;
Even the flagpole mimics a gentle chime;
We find solitary spots
and embrace
