What is Student Leadership?

With the end of the Fall Semester comes cold weather, the flu, finals, and student leadership. Student Senate had their first set of elections on Nov. 19 and now Student Development has begun to advertise for all of the other leadership positions. These positions are the Core Team, O Team, CAB, Senate, Multicultural Leaders, and Student Ministry Coordinators.

Reactions and Reasons: Second North’s Indefinite Closure

On Thursday, Nov. 18, the students and faculty of Covenant College received an email with the title “Official Statement - Closing Second North Hall.” The administration unanimously came to the difficult decision, after previous warnings and attempts at reconciliation, to shut down Second North for disciplinary reasons. Sadness, frustration, and confusion circled campus, but not without hope for future healing.

A Very Covenant Christmas

Christmas wasn’t part of the Covenant College experience last year. With students going home at Thanksgiving and not returning until the end of January, Christmas celebrations were nonexistent. As a result, this is the first Covenant Christmas for not just one, but two classes of students who are getting to experience the holidays on campus and all the excitement that comes with them.

ADHD on Campus

ADHD — it’s a household name by now. In 2016, 6.1 million children had been diagnosed with it. For many, the acronym brings to mind the mental image of hyperactive six-year-old boys being chased around the grocery store and classroom by helpless parents and teachers. But ADHD is a far more complex diagnosis and the repercussions that come alongside living with it last into adult life, including college years.

Covenant Students Share Testimonies at Outback Steakhouse

On November 2nd, a Covenant student named Colby Marie Finch had the desire to do some thrifting on the evening of her birthday, so she asked some friends to join her at America’s Thrift, and to maybe grab some dinner afterwards. After some indecisiveness, and trying for the nearby Chili’s, the group decided upon the Outback Steakhouse that was within sight, and without a wait for a table.

Post-Fall Break Crisis At the Blink

During Fall Break at Covenant College, dining services and other sects of the school were closed as students left campus. But as students were preparing to return, they heard that their main campus café, the Blink, had been shut down due to a maintenance issue. Students received an email the 19th of October informing them that the Blink would be closed due to facility repairs for the same evening that they were supposed to return to normal operating hours.

Spanish is the Bonus

Dr. Forteza is the new assistant professor of Spanish at Covenant College. She was born in Uruguay, but her parents are missionaries in Argentina where she grew up. She originally came to the U.S. to attend a Bible college for a year, then later went to seminary graduate school to pursue biblical counseling and theology. Years later, after gaining a masters of divinity and counseling, a masters in English, a PHD in Anglo-Spanish literature, and taking on a few extra jobs, she went to Grove City College to teach language and literature. At Grove City, she officially fell in love with teaching Spanish.

Current: a journal of opinion and commentary on culture

Jay D. Green, Professor of History at Covenant, is the managing editor for an online journal called Current. It provides commentary and reflection on culture, politics, and contemporary ideas. According to their “about” page, “we seek to ground ourselves in the broad tradition of American democracy — a tradition whose practices and institutions we believe are moving through a period of great stress and testing. We confess that we once took for granted many of the basic assumptions of our democracy, including a shared core of American values. We no longer do.” The goal of this platform is to aspire to civil free thought and discussion.
