sonnet for a stranger

I missed you last week when you told me your name

But then walked away without leaving a mark.

This world is too big to recall every face

Since more anchors are needed to slow wand’ring barks.

I danced in the rain and I hoped you would see

When I rolled down that hill just to seem more alive.

But you turned away quickly, did not value me

I suppose such is fair since all memory denies.

Yet there’s something to say for a world where two lives

Can cross once, and have the chance to meet again

We’re lucky for this: every once in a while

A bad first impression, reviewed, turns a friend.

So forgive me if I missed your name in the crush,

And next time let’s talk a while, not in a rush.
