Letter-writing is a lovely art that is being lost in today’s culture and world. Society often enjoys quick communication through a screen, but it is a good thing to have the willingness to slow the pace, lean into creativity, and send messages on paper.
Though sending letters through the mail may take longer than a simple text message, it is worth it to show the depth of your care for the person receiving your words through letter form. Letter-writing is a more intentional, meaningful, and heartfelt way to send words of encouragement or an uplifting message to friends and family because you are kindly taking the time to handwrite what you want to say and send it through the mail, though it may take a few days.
Not only does receiving a letter in the mail add more excitement to one’s going to the mailbox, but it also shows your care in a very special, creative way, which other fast forms of communication cannot. Seeing and reading messages in someone’s unique handwritten script adds to the beauty of it. You can even be creative with stamps and stationery. My sister Naya, an incredible artist, can transform an empty white envelope into a world of wonder. I enjoy lighting a candle and melting wax to make beautiful seals for my letters, even adding a pressed flower petal or slipping inside a nature treasure like a leaf, wildflower or feather for the receiver to find and be delighted by. It is these little displays of love in both words and tokens which make letter-writing so special. Letters are a way to personally display that you are thinking of someone and want to touch their soul with your words in a precious form.
Letters also provide the opportunity to be more detailed and descriptive of what is on your heart and mind and sharing them through the ink in your pen. It is worth the bit more work it takes to send your words this way.
As college students, it can be difficult to find the time to write letters with busy academic schedules and extra-curricular activities, but it is a wise and worthwhile use of your time to set aside pockets in your day to write letters to your friends and family who are far from you and miss you and who will be blessed and touched by your words, more than you know.
Letter-writing is a wonderful way to stay connected with others through handwritten messages that could bring healing to a hurting heart and peace in a painful season, that could mean so very much to the soul receiving them.
