Single Hearts Still Sparkle

Valentine’s Day is the day in the year where you grab a friend, rewatch a rom-com, bake some brownies, and think some once-a-year thoughts. You are very aware of your singleness but not as aware as you will be, for tomorrow, February 15, brings Singleness Awareness Day (literally S.A.D.). They didn’t think you felt single enough yesterday, the day for relationships, so they gave you one more try to really delve into those emotions. Get up, grab another friend, and rewatch that rom-com one more time.

I know we’ve all been told this so many times, but there’s nothing wrong with being single. It gives a person so much freedom, friend time, and even alone time unthinkable to couples. However, it can be tough being told to “bring a plus one” to your cousin’s wedding or “ask a friend” to a school dance (but make sure you don’t ruin her chances of being asked by someone else). Life without “your person” is tough, but Singleness Awareness Day can be a gift in itself.

Ask a friend to go to a basketball game with you (and teach them the rules), be there for a hallmate going through a tough time (and binge some junk food together), have long, uninterrupted phone calls with your parents over Great Hall beef tips and sunsets. There is so much to be aware of in your single life and spiraling about not having an “always person” is not the best use of a Friday night. Life in a relationship can be so full, but a single life can be too. However your Valentine’s Day was this year, good or bad, single, in a relationship, or complicated (I’m so sorry), reach out to your single friends and make them feel a little less aware of it this Singleness Awareness.
