Why I Love My (Music) Major

“Music is the social act of communication with people, a gesture of friendship, the strongest act there is.” – Malcolm Arnold.

Since I was an infant, I have been singing (or so I am told.) There is a video somewhere of me laying on my playmat before I could roll over, babbling in unintelligible song my simple joys to my Creator.

That is why I chose to be a music major! Music connects us all, whether we are actively learning how to sing or play an instrument or just enjoy listening to music in general. It is something that flows through each and every one of us. All of us can talk about music we love in some capacity, and as I pursue a degree in music, I am learning how to bring God’s people together in glorifying the Lord.

In Genesis 2:23, Adam sings the first song when he sees Eve. He loves her so dearly and is so thankful to the Lord that he is moved to song. Not everyone loves to sing or even wants to, but all of us are called to sing in some capacity to glorify the Lord. I pursue music in college because I want to be able to use the talent the Lord has given me musically to empower others to worship the Lord.

Also, music is fun! Just like other majors, there are so many little details that make music work. If you don't have music theory … well, you’ll be in trouble. Every instrument works differently, and every voice has a different timbre. No two musicians or instruments are the same!

The Lord is so gracious in giving us each individual talents, and I am so thankful to pursue music with the Covenant College Music Department. I love working alongside my fellow musicians to grow in our abilities so that we can give back to the people around us the gift the Lord has given us.

“I will praise You, Lord, among the peoples; I will sing praises to You among the nations!” Psalm 57:9 NKJV.
