What has been your favorite aspect of Covenant Women’s Tennis?

On Saturday, April 1, Covenant Men’s Tennis won a close competition against in-conference opponent, the Piedmont University Lions. It was a tough and tight match played on a beautiful April Saturday, and there was much excitement.

On March 13-14 2023, the Covenant Scots golf team took home the first program win in five years. Led by stellar performances by Kenny Duffin ‘24, Grant Little ‘25 and Wiley Hickerson ‘26, the Scots won the Chattahoochee Collegiate Tournament at the Chattahoochee Golf Club in Gainesville, Georgia. 

On February 15, 2023, the Covenant Scots men's basketball team took the court for their last home game, led by forward Promise Igbanu ‘23. They took on the LaGrange Panthers, who entered the game ranked second in the conference. Prior to the game, the Scots honored Igbanu, the lone senior in the Men’s Basketball program. According to HomeTeam US, a sports analytics company, Igbanu is the third rated Division III Forward for the month of February, with a rating of 93. This follows a tied-for-fourth, 92 ranking, for the month of January. He averages an impressive 20 plus points per game (ppg) and seven rebounds per game according to the Covenant Scots website. 

Construction workers screamed “airball!” Girls wore pink shiesties and neon wigs. Lumberjacks. Halls clad in jerseys. Pajama-wearing fanatics. A mysterious banana man. Berea players were being relentlessly taunted for wearing the wrong warmup jerseys. Max Out Barnes, as always was a night to remember. 

On Saturday, November 5, the Covenant Scots women’s volleyball won the inaugural Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) Conference Tournament, defeating Huntingdon in a mere three sets, after rolling through Berea the night before, in the conference semi-finals.

The Covenant Scots varsity men’s soccer team is heading to the inaugural Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) Men’s Soccer Conference Finals. The boys are playing their best soccer of the year, rolling through opponents leading up to the conference tournament, and continuing their dominance into the tournament.

On Friday, October 14, many Covenant students departed for lakes, beaches, childhood homes or homes of their friends. It was fall break! A time for rest and relaxation. However, a certain demographic of Covenant students did not receive the same break experience that most of the student body got to experience. While many got to rest, our student athletes were hard at work: holding practice, competing in games, and not getting to experience the family time that so many Covenant students were able to have.

On Thursday, October 6, one of the most painful games of the modern NFL era aired on Amazon Prime. A matchup between the Denver Broncos and Indianapolis Colts was a game of sacks, interceptions, offensive miscues, and, most importantly, field goals. You might be wondering: “What word is missing from this list?” The answer is: touchdowns. Somehow the final score was 12-9, a game consisting of seven made field goals, one blocked field goal and a panoply of incomplete passes and interceptions in the red zone and end zone.

Some might say that Lane Stadium, bouncing as “Enter Sandman” plays and the Virginia Tech football team runs in, is the best atmosphere in college sports. Others might claim that it’s Bryant-Denny as the Crimson Tide runs onto the field, and even others might claim it’s Williams-Bryce as “Sandstorm” echoes off the walls and rally towels swing through the air.

On September 24th, Homecoming returned in its full force to Covenant College. The homecoming soccer game is a staple of life at Covenant and for many, they have never seen a “true homecoming” in their Covenant careers. This is thanks to the COVID year in 2020 and then last year due to rain, the game was moved down the mountain to Chattanooga Christian School. This year however, the homecoming game returned to its rightful place, on Scotland Yard, with a full crowd, not one separated by social distancing, or guarded with masks, but united under the desire to watch their Scots succeed. Weston Marshall ‘24 says “It was ecstatic, hearing the roars of our friends, family, and the rest of the school: as they band together as one unit, to support the team, is an incomparable feeling”

On March 29, 2022, the Washington Nationals released their Nike City Connect Cherry Blossom jerseys. These jerseys are the latest in the line of a series of jerseys by Nike which deviate from a team’s typical colors and uniforms and attempt to connect with the culture and history of the cities in which the team plays.

For the past two weeks, America has been obsessed with Doug Edert and the St. Peter’s University Peacocks. March Madness has captured the nation with millions of sports fans glued to their TVs hoping they correctly predicted their brackets. For many, the hopes of a perfect bracket fell apart when the Number 15 seed St. Peter’s Peacocks knocked off No. 2 seed and Final Four contender, the Kentucky Wildcats.

Ballparks across Florida and Arizona have come to life in the past two days. The sound of leather baseballs into leather gloves is echoing throughout bullpens and ballparks. The crack of a maple bat meeting a center-cut, four-seam fastball cuts through the silence that these ballparks endured for four weeks. The wait is finally over, to the delight of sports fans across the country, our nation’s pastime has returned.

On February 2, 2022, after a two-year hiatus as the “Washington Football Team”, The NFL team hailing from our nation’s capital announced its new brand, introducing: The Washington Commanders. For some readers, neither of these names sound familiar. In order to understand, one must rewind to July 2020.
