What it means to be a Scot: Seniors in Sports Series - Finishing the Five Year Run

Finishing the Five Year Run

What has being a part of Scots Athletics meant to me? Being a part of Scots Athletics, and more specifically being a part of the Cross Country and Track teams, has meant being a part of a family. It means that as I stare down what seems like the impossible task of tackling both the harsh environment of a cross country race and the pressure of the ticking clock, I have a group of remarkable friends who are right there pushing and encouraging me to showcase my best self.

Some of my most cherished memories come from the bus rides in which we blared music on our way back from a successful meet, when we listened for an hour as Sarah Holler drew out her elaborate bluetown/cheerio joke only for it to end in a REALLY bad pun (even though she promised it wouldn’t), and the memories that came from the exhilarating feeling of crossing the finish line, seeing the clock and knowing you’ve just shattered every expectation you had for yourself moments before the gun went off.

One of my all-time favorite experiences came out of my sophomore year after our brutally hot conference cross country race, in which we found out that we had won our conference meet both on the mens and womens teams. It was an amazing feeling, and one that I’ll never forget.

I know that once I’ve graduated, I’m going to miss the adventurous recovery runs with the team; I’m going to miss the feeling of shouting our team chant, the “Shoo Shaa”; moments before we plunge into the frenzy of a cross country race; and finally, I know I’m going to miss the chance to come to practice, ready to embrace whatever the day has prepared for me with the best Cross Country and Track team around.

Being a Covenant Scot over the past five years has meant so much to me, and it’s been a wonderful experience having the opportunity to run for Covenant, doing the sport that I love in a unique and amazing environment!
